lapland 2013 part III.

on our first day of hiking in Kilpisjärvi we spent the whole morning climbing to the top of Saana mountain: unfortunately the view from up there was not as mesmerizing as it was last year because of a thick layer of fog. despite the unforgiving weather we decided to continue hiking towards Saanajärvi - a lake that I had not yet seen. it took us a couple of hours to finally reach the lake - which was completely hidden by the fog: how disappointing! the red and orange colours of the landscape though were so beautiful that our walk had been totally worth the effort.

some might wonder what is so fascinating about hiking through bare and rocky landscapes in such foul weather: I think the extraordinary silence and the incredible scenery make it one of the most intense experience one could ever have. it is difficult to express this into words - our first day of hiking was over and I could not wait to start another one.

  1. It's almost an alien space sometimes, but you are so right it's just so fascinating walking with rock and dark weather! These are fantastic Polly, I'm jealous of the colors you capture!

  2. It's fantastic! I love these pictures and I can understand what you love about hiking through those landscapes. I was in Shetland for some weeks in August and it looked similar there. I'm not much of an outdoor person, but I, too, loved it so much, wandering through those sceneries and I miss it already...

    1. Thank you, Katie! It is the walkway that leads up and down from the Saana mountain - it doesn't show much in the photograph, but it is in fact a staircase and the steps are quite large too. Climbing it is quite an exercise!

    2. I've been two times in Lapland, once in Sweden and once in Finland, when I was a bit younger and went on vacation with my parents. I wish I would not be so far away from NL!

    3. I had never been to Swedish Lapland, but I'm sure it's beautiful too! Actually, Lapland is very far even from Helsinki - it's true we can drive a car from here to there, but it still takes more than 13 hours!

    1. E' la scala che porta alla cima del monte Saana - un po' in salita, ma il panorama merita davvero! Grazie Emini!
