kaunissaari part II.

the journey to Kaunissaari on the little wooden ferry took longer than I expected - almost fifty minutes - but I did not mind. I had never been so far out in the archipelago of Helsinki before and everything looked fascinating to me: from the sunlight sparkling on the sea to all the sailing boats.

lately I have been thinking about the sea and what it means to me: until I moved to Helsinki four years ago it was an unfamiliar concept though now I do not think I could live without it. what I love the most about Finland is that I can enjoy both the sea and the forest at the same time!

kaunissaari part I.

last week we decided to spend Juhannusatto with a group of dear friends in Kaunissaari and it turned out to be the loveliest Midsummer I have spent in Finland so far! I was really excited about visiting the island for the first time and found it very fascinating: in fact I shot two entire rolls of film there. I am going to share my photographs of Kaunissaari for the next few weeks now!
Kaunissaari - the beautiful island:

Kaunissaari literally means beautiful island and it truly stands for its name. I took these first photographs while waiting for our ferry in Vuosaari: I especially like the one of my friend Mandi. that morning the sun was shining and the clouds looked like pretty decorations in the sky: a fine day for sailing! our boat was the little one you can see approaching in the third photograph.

transparency.

I am taking part in the collective exhibition Viimeinen Puolukka – The Last Lingonberry with my installation Transparency. if you happen to be in Helsinki on a sunny day take a walk around the beautiful nature reserve of Kivinokka: there you will find numerous installations worth experiencing.

Transparency is a double-exposed photograph printed on a glass plate and installed in the natural environment: the transparency and flimsiness of the glass symbolises the fragility of the relationship human-nature. you are welcome to visit Viimeinen Puolukka in Kivinokka until the 30th of October: the exhibition is also recommended by Helsinki City Tourist Information!

one summer evening II.

for those who appreciated the double-exposures in my previous post: here is another one that Jacopo took of me which I really like and a few more photographs of that romantic evening in Seurasaari.
more photographs of a summer evening:

since that night I have not seen the hot air balloons flying above Helsinki again: the weather has been rainy and cold like it had never been during my previous summers here. I really hope the sun will come back to warm us soon enough. I cannot believe tomorrow will be already Midsummer!
Hyvää Juhannusta! ♥

one summer evening I.

what I love the most about summers in Helsinki is the evening light. on a Saturday two weeks ago we decided to go to Seurasaari after 10pm to enjoy the beauty and the quietness of the island just before sunset: that day we took some double-exposures and spotted some colourful hot air balloons.
one summer evening:

I particularly like the first double-exposure I took of Jacopo: the light looks truly golden there. the weather has been rainy lately but I hope there will be more golden evenings like that one this summer.
P.S. more double-exposures and romantic photographs to come soon!

repovesi national park II.

here are a few more photographs I took during our hike in Repovesi National Park two weeks ago. along the Ketunlenkki trail we climbed the Katajavuori hill and when we finally reached the top the view over Lapinsalmi was absolutely breath-taking. towards the end of our walk we also got to cross the lake via the magnificent Lapinsalmi hanging bridge: it was all very exciting!

sadly I still think my photographs did not turn out the way I really wanted: it was too bright for my 400 iso film. also when we were on top of Katajavuori hill the sun was shining directly towards us and that made it very difficult to take a decent photograph of the beautiful view. I will definitely have to go back to Repovesi once again to take more photographs and try a different hiking path too!

repovesi national park I.

two weeks ago on Sunday we decided to visit Repovesi National Park for the first time. since the drive from Helsinki to the Kymenlaakso region took us over three hours we only had a small part of the afternoon left to hike. we decided to take the Ketunlenkki trail: a short and rather easy walk that nonetheless gave us plenty of opportunities to admire the beauty of the national park.
my photographs of Repovesi National Park:
Nikomat EL - Kodak 400
I am not completely happy with the way my photographs turned out: in my opinion quite overexposed and grainy. on the way to Repovesi the weather was very cloudy - hence my decision to load a 400 iso film roll - though the sky opened up as soon as we reached our destination and it became too bright for the film I had chosen. nevertheless we had a wonderful afternoon and I was glad we could enjoy the unexpected sunshine. I will share a few more photographs in my next post!

kesäinen suomenlinna II.

here is the second batch and my personal favourite selection of the photographs Jacopo and I took in Suomenlinna over two weeks ago. I hope you will appreciate them as much as I do. the tones in these are a little less warm then in the previous ones but nonetheless charming. I am really becoming fond of the Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 rated at 25 iso!
kesäinen Suomenlinna:
Hasselblad 500 C/M - Lomography Redscale XR 50-200
I have always loved the colourful wooden houses of Suomenlinna and that yellow one in particular is one of my favourites. the sky was so luminous that day that the horizon looked misty in the distance: it was a really charming sight that I could never get tired of gazing at!
hyvää viikonloppua! ♥

kesäinen suomenlinna I.

that Sunday was one of the last warm days we had before it started raining again: I am glad we decided to spend it in Suomenlinna. I was wearing the most summery outfit of my entire wardrobe and I almost felt like we were on holidays. I hope that the sun will shine above Helsinki again soon!
kesäinen Suomenlinna:
Hasselblad 500 C/M - Lomography Redscale XR 50-200
once again I took my Hasselblad along with a Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 rated at 25 iso and once again I was pleased by the results I got: in my opinion the warm tones add a beautiful nostalgic touch to the photographs without being overwhelmingly red. yet this is not my favourite selection of images from that film roll: I will share more of them later this week!
